πŸ”₯ This Week’s Biggest Search Stories

The biggest Google AI search push to date is here

Google adds Gemini to Chrome and Announces Upcoming AI Mode in Chrome Address Bar

Mike Torres / Google

Google has launched Gemini in Chrome for Mac and Windows desktop users in the US. Additionally, Google has announced that:

  • Later this month in English in the US you’ll have the option to quickly access AI Mode right from the Chrome address bar (the omnibox).
  • In the coming months, Google will be introducing agentic capabilities to Gemini in Chrome.

Read the announcement.

Let's better focus on the top 10 results...

Google Modifies Search Results Parameter, Affecting SEO Tools

Matt G. Southern / Search Engine Journal

Google has disabled the &num=100 results parameter, disrupting rank trackers and prompting a rethink of impressions:

  • Many saw desktop impressions drop around September 10.
  • A working theory is that past spikes were inflated by bots loading 100-result pages.
  • Coincidentally, or not, Google is also hiring an Anti-Scraper Engineer Analyst.

Barry Schwartz got a statement from a Google spokesperson:

"The use of this URL parameter is not something that we formally support."

Google is expanding its merchant layer

Announcing the store widget: build shopper confidence and drive sales

Aparna Mohan / Google

Google announced a new store widget, a dynamic element ecommerce sites can embed directly onto any page that highlights the store's quality to shoppers by providing visual indicators like store reviews, shipping, returns, competitive pricing and payment options, among others.

The data and associated ratings shown are sourced through the Store Quality program from the site Merchant Center account.

Here's how to participate and use it.

πŸ—žοΈ More Updates from Search Engines

Follow publishers and creators inside Discover

Google Discover Adds Social Media Posts & Follow Buttons

Matt G. Southern / Search Engine Journal

Google is updating Discover with two changes:

  • You can now follow publishers directly in Discover to see more of their content.
  • Google will start showing social posts from platforms like X, Instagram, and YouTube Shorts in the feed. Yet another reason to invest and align with social media and community management efforts.

It's time to access and show those positive outcomes more easily

Google Search Console adds an achievements section

Barry Schwartz / Search Engine Land

Google added a new section to Google Search Console to show your β€œachievements” in the Search Console interface. This was previously only emailed as part of the receive Insights experience emails you received monthly, but now there is a dedicated report for these achievements.

First time a major US publisher does this

Rolling Stone, Billboard Owner Penske sues Google over AI overviews

Aditya Soni / Reuters

Penske Media (the owner of Rolling Stone, Billboard and Variety) sued Google, alleging that Google’s AI summaries use its journalism without consent and reduce traffic to its websites: β€œWithout the leverage, Google would have to pay publishers for the right to republish their work or use it to train its AI systems”, the company said.

Google... the Web savior?

Google: Searchers Want AI Summaries Over Links

Barry Schwartz / Search Engine Roundtable

Markham Erickson from Google said that searchers want AI Overviews, "contextual answers and summaries," over links to publishers. But to help the ecosystem and the value exchange, Google will continue to provide links.

  • Asking (49%): interacting with it as an advisor.
  • Doing (40%): Encompassing task-oriented interactions such as drafting text, planning, or programming.
  • Expressing (11%): Using it for personal reflection, exploration, and play.

OpenAI has also made improvements to search in ChatGPT in the last few days, to improve factuality, shopping and formatting.

Structured data a hot topic in 2025?

Does schema help you surface more in Google’s AI Mode?

Dan Taylor

There has been a lot of discussion in the SEO community about whether Schema markup influences visibility in Google’s AI Mode.

Dan analyzed 107,352 websites that appeared as citations in AI Mode and identified that while Schema is widely present, no single type beyond the standard set (Organization, WebPage, Article, etc) appears to give a measurable advantage.

I hope this doesn't disincentivize you from using structured data, although helps you to prioritize based on impact and effort
