β Many of us in SEO had been sharing and warning for a while how Google's SGE answers were suboptimal across so many scenarios when it was in its testing period, and now that Google finally released it with the new "AI Overviews" name, even if they're being shown for far fewer queries, the general public has noticed, and the backlash is here.
β Google had a year to test the AI overviews results and here we are, major media (like the NY Times or CNN) now covering their bad quality.
And no, this is not the equivalent of ranking lower quality results. Itβs worse. One thing is when you rank lower quality content in some scenarios, which is already bad but at least users can easily see the source of the information.

Another is that Google directly showcases a summary with bad or wrong information packaging it in a way that makes it hard to understand where it's coming from in the first place. How can users trust these answers?

Being a reliable source of information is the base of a search platform, and from what weβre seeing here, it seems that theyβve forgotten what makes them the top search choice for the audience.

Letβs hope this makes Google reconsider their approach so far not only for their users but for their own good too.

One of the functionalities I've found particularly useful of the free Ahrefs Webmaster Tools (that I haven't seen in other tools) is the one provided through the Site Audit's "SERP Title Changed" report.
This report provides a list of your site pages for which Google has changed their SERP titles over time, allowing you to easily compare it with the title tag you have specified for them and check if it's different than the SERP titles or not, and if so, how it's changed, facilitating their optimization:
This report also lets you prioritize the pages based on their traffic, keyword position, and more. If you haven't yet started to use Ahrefs Webmaster Tools for free, this might be a great time to start doing it.
