πŸ™‹πŸ»β€β™€οΈ This week's Aleyda's SEO Take

I'm feeling particularly thankful at the moment going back home after a fruitful week in NYC, where I had the chance, among other things, to co-organize a successful SEOFOMO x Wix Studio Meetup in NYC with the fantastic team from Wix.

There's a third edition of the SEOFOMO meetup already in the making, but I would love to hear your thoughts about the potential locations of the next ones! Watch this video with my good friend (and awesome SEO) Mike King, and let me know.

Besides coordinating and speaking at events, this week also gave me the chance to have insightful search related conversations with many SEOs from all around the world.

In one of them, when discussing the latest Google core update I mentioned how they actually had sort of warn us about what was going to happen with the latest updates in their content guidelines:

"Avoid creating search engine-first content... focus on creating people-first content to be successful with Google Search, rather than search engine-first content made primarily to gain search engine rankings."

A way to assess this is if you're willing to do something that could be perceived to be detrimental by your users just because you've seen/heard it might help to rank better. If so, then this is you, and it's time to put your users first.

What would a real business or an "established brand" do instead?

Would a *real* business or established brand do something detrimental to its users/customers for the sake of rankings?

No...

  1. They want to rank to attract users/customers in the first place, why would they do something that might hurt those who are actually already using and/or paying them already?
  2. What would be doing something that could hurt their users say about their brand and business ethics? Reputation is key for *real* businesses.

Of course, we have also other more in-depth methodologies to assess this. Among others, questions to evaluate the content Quality, Helpfulness and Experience.

However, asking if "a real business would be doing this"? when trying to validate or explain the reason to approve (or not) a tactic with stakeholders or decision makers might work wonders in a straight-forward way. This simple question can save you a lot of time when explaining a decision to non-SEOs too. I highly recommend you to use it.
